First off, let me just say that it would be amazing to receive packages or letters from home! They don't have things in Burundi like we do in the States, and even the stuff you can get is really expensive and still not quite the same. So thank you if you are considering sending me a package or letter. I can assure you it will make my day, week, and even possibly my month! The following is instructions on sending packages. Letters and Cards can be sent as normal.
There are a few ways to send a package:
1. The Padded Envelope Option:
By sending your "package" in a padded envelope, it will probably be cheaper and it will come directly into our mailbox and I will not have to pay a customs fee. However, sending this way, you have to make sure the contents are not very fragile as the envelope will get beat up. So it's up to you. If you don't have very many items to send, this could be the way to do it.
2. Cheapest Option:
You can pick up a flat-rate box from the U.S. Post Office. These boxes are great because as long as it fits in the box, and the whole thing is under 20lbs. it is the same price no matter what. The flat-rate box is the same one you can use in the States as well. It usually says "for Domestic and International Use" on the side of it. As long as it says "International" you can use it to send to me. There are two sizes of boxes. The smaller one cost $38.95 and the larger on costs $49.95. Flat rate is by far the cheapest way to send a package...unless you know of something else. The post office will tell you it will get there in 6-10 days, but will really take about 3 weeks if not longer.
3. Not as Cheap Option:
If the contents of your package weigh over 20lbs. you can still send it via the post office, but it will cost much more depending on the weight. For example, a large box that weighs 30lbs is over $100! You can go online to the USPS to calculate the cost based on size and weight.
4. Most Expensive Option:
Sending a package via FedEx, UPS, or DHL is by far the most expensive way to send a package. It may get there faster, but it definitely costs a lot more! -Well into the hundreds.
